Always Remember That ...

The worst day fishing is better then the best day working.

Forgotten Tales 1

Back in the early 70's, I went fishing with my family at our farm near Lake Dauphin, Manitoba. We walked down to the water with our fishing rods. My rod had an old bait casting reel that didn't cast. All I could do was pull out about five feet of line.

The family spread out along the shoreline. I found a spot on a huge rock (at least it was to a four year old). While standing there, I put my hook in the water and just pulled the rod from side to side. (To a little kid, this was fishing.)

My older brother Dave was casting and retrieving an orange spoon with black dots on it a little ways away from me. Suddenly he got a bite. It was a nice little Jack fish (Northern Pike). As he reeled in the fish, it broke the line right by shore and swan away along the shoreline.

I saw him swimming towards the rock I was on. I placed the hook (a "Red Devil", a red and white spoon) right in front of the fish. The fish bit. I was so excited when I pulled that Jack out of the water. Not only did I catch my first fish, I also got a new lure with it.

My brother had other ideas though. He was happy to see I caught the fish that got away. But I believe it was more because he wanted his hook back. He came over and told me it was his hook. Him being the ripe old age of seven, there was no point in arguing. I gave him back the hook, but I caught my first fish.
